DEVELOPMENT OF A CONTAINER TERMINAL IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

  • Client  : GMT
  • Period : 2021-2022
  • Location : Nigeria
  • Subject : Technical studies for the development of a container port at the Apapa channel in Lagos.

Challenges :

Designed to create local and national dynamics while increasing port capacity in Nigeria, the new Lagos container terminal faced several constraints from the design phase through to implementation:

  • Very poor geotechnical soil quality
  • High load demands on port infrastructure
  • Cost optimization of construction
  • Minimization of environmental and biodiversity impacts
  • Improvement of the client’s management and operational mode.

Sollution :

Conducting technical studies for the new Lagos container terminal:

  • Capacity study to optimally define the terminal layout
  • Identification of necessary handling equipment for operations
  • Consideration of deep foundation works: pile-supported wharf and combi-wall quay for STS Post-Panamax cranes and 300 m LOA vessels, due to poor geotechnical conditions and sedimentation risks
  • Detailed design of docking facilities (dolphins) and quay equipment (fenders, bollards)
